Ryan Joseph's Birth Story

Here is Ryan's birth story in timeline form:

March 12, 2013

12am- Admitted to L&D for scheduled induction at 37w2d

1 am- Cytotec inserted to begin softening the cervix and start contractions

2:30-3am- Contractions became too strong and close together and baby was not handling them well, so the nurses came in to give me a shot of terbutaline to slow them down and oxygen to bring his heart rate back up. Everything ended up fine!

3-6am- Contractions were getting more regular, stronger, and uncomfortable. The nurse encouraged me to get my epidural before the OB came to break my water, and I happily obliged!

6:15am- 3 cm dilated, got epidural

7am- My mom arrived at the hospital and Joey woke up from his sleep on the not-so-comfortable couch bed. I was comfortable and resting (and putting on make-up :))

*At some point in here, the nurse started me on the lowest dose of Pitocin, but when the OB arrived, she told her to stop it because my contractions were regular and strong without it.

9:15am- OB arrived to check me and break my water. I was 4 cm. She wasn't really able to break the water because Ryan was so low and it was hard to get to the amniotic sac. The doctor said she had a feeling I would go quickly, so she would stay close by.

9:45am- Nurse checked me and I was 6-7cm and fully effaced

10:30am- I began to feel pressure and called the nurse. The OB and nurse came in to check me and told me I was complete and ready to push. When the OB said, "Let's have a baby!" Joey said, "Like, right now?" He couldn't believe it!

10:39am- I began pushing. There were some scary moments when Ryan's heart rate dropped after the contractions and the OB thought she might have to use the vacuum, but he recovered and was born after just 17 minutes of pushing.

10:56am- Ryan was born, perfect and screaming, weighing 5lbs 13oz. The moment was completely surreal and amazing. *TMI alert* I had a 2nd degree episiotomy, so not too bad, but boy is it still painful sometimes!

We are truly blessed to have this little man in our lives.

Merry Christmas!

Last night we read Twas the Night Before Christmas (with Jan Brett's illustrations) to baby boy. It was bittersweet because I knew we should have been reading it to Faith for her first Christmas Eve. We remember her today but are also thankful for the blessing of her little brother who will join us next year.
I totally forgot I made this blog until I came across it in some old bookmarks the other day.  I can't believe my last post was August 16,  2014 and it's now June 20, 2022, and Ryan is 9 years old. Boy have things changed. I need to take time to go through old pictures as he's been growing and post them. Right now Ryan's favorite things are baseball (he has been playing since the days of t-ball at age 4), Fortnite, and watching YouTube videos. He will start 4th grade at the beginning of August! He is such a sweet, kind boy, does great in school, and makes friends easily. (Not that he can't still have his moments, as any kid does.) For now, here are a few pictures. He recently got the glasses, which I love! Hopefully I'll write again soon.

Weeks 17 and 20 (October-November)
